“Does Compute”

Although they lack the sweet fashion sense of snazzy Swedish cohorts The Hives or The (International) Noise Conspiracy, the Division of Laura Lee hails from the same musical family of retro garage rock. DoLL’s scruffiness is, in fact, a perfect match for the rough-hewn, loosey-gooesy sound of its second album. The fuzz-toned guitars, squalling effects and snarling vocals of “Q2” or “Does Compute” are straight out of the Stooges school of ’70s punk and delivered with gusto. The lo-fi pop of “Dirty Love” and the irresistible “All Streets End” are catchier but certainly just as raw. More daring are the ethereal “Breathe, Breathe” and mopey “The Other Side,” which draw from vintage Pink Floyd and Joy Division and make for a clever change of pace. DoLL may lack style, but it makes it up with substance — and that always computes. ~ E! Online
