Beck’s follow-up to 2002’s acoustic-heavy Sea Change marks a return to his signature “junkyard-funk” sound of previous records.
He’s reunited with Odelay producers The Dust Brothers for a supposed collection of guitar-heavy songs with party-friendly hip-hops beats. I say supposed because I’ve only heard a couple of songs, and one of those is a remix of the album version.
But Guero won’t just be an Odelay 2. Rolling Stone reports that uptempo tracks like “Girl” are tempered with somber, even morbid lyrics. “Some Beatles songs are pretty dark,” says Beck. “Or Brian Wilson’s. Some of the cheeriest songs have that undercurrent.”
