If summertime activities have put you behind as far as finding new music goes, I highly suggest trying Jagwar Ma’s new record on for size. Their debut LP, Howlin, finally places their somewhat disjointed prior releases into a cohesive package with the addition of some fantastic new material. Riding the line between electronics and traditional indie psychedelia, they’ve managed to stay somewhat under the radar in terms of exposure — but fresh on the heels of their first album, their name is finally starting to appear on the lineup lists of big name festivals. If you don’t have the time for the whole album, “Come Save Me” is a good appetizer track.
One thing I’ve noticed about Jagwar Ma’s tracks is a tendency for songs to morph from simple, straight-forward, stripped-down rock tunes into full-fledged trip fests at around the halfway mark. While this transformation manifests itself differently from song to song, “Come Save Me” adheres to this formula without going completely off the wall with the Brian Eno/Todd Rundgren-esque synths sending you into space like some of their deeper cuts.
The catchy chorus, thumping basslines, and panned background vocals give it a definite throwback surf-rock feel while a heavy dose of effects and some playful synths make for a refreshing new dimension to what the Beach Boys pioneered decades ago.
This is a great track – sort of Beach Boys meets Tame Impala.
