For a synthetic rock band in 2013, Magic Man has a pretty subtle sound and, although they may be tiptoeing into the music world, those small steps are about to make a lot of noise. Made up of “Alex, Daniel, Justine, Nolan, Sam,” they originally began as a duo in 2010. Based on their music released most recently, the five-piece band suits them best.
The music is quick and sharp but steady throughout the duration of “Paris” so that instead of injecting us with adrenaline, we are carefully and pleasantly subdued.
The beginning “jingle,” if you will, sets in motion the play that the song crafts with the image of a playful, old fashioned carousel that one would expect to see lit up at night with adorable little children and chic young couples circling it. By the time the chorus drops, the image of the carousel and your hair flying in the wind is a distant image and you are launched into a night of complete debauchery, the kind of night that you cannot seem to remember but that you desperately wish you could go back to.
For Magic Man, and for the rest of us, that’s what “Paris” will be: one of those songs that will transport you back to a memory or place, recreating a Paris for everyone.
