Jason Quever’s a really talented guy. He’s recorded some pretty great bands at his Pan American studios in San Francisco, and he’s even put together a few crackling albums there himself, under the moniker Papercuts. But, it appears that his recent move to Sub Pop brought a slight change in they way things get done.
While bits of Quever’s upcoming album, Fading Parade, were recorded at Pan American, the bulk of it came to fruition at the Hangar in Sacramento. Those studios are perhaps most renowned for their inventive positional miking capabilities, which have contributed cool atmospherics to records like Thee Oh Sees’ Help. Known for his meticulous approach to recording, Quever this time ceded at least a little control to producer Thom Monahan, who has worked with Beechwood Sparks, Au Revoir Simone, and Vetiver.
Lead single “Do What You Will” might have the distinction of being the most upbeat Papercuts song I’ve heard to date. If its gorgeous ambiance and shimmering guitars are any indication of how things went in the studio, then I’m particularly whetted for whatever comes next.
