Grains, the third album from German duo Boozoo Bajou, represents a successful fusion of musical elements old and new. Heavily influenced by the Laurel Canyon sounds of 1970s Los Angeles, but utilising the very best of today’s recording and production technologies, the album is awash with dreamy and seductive sonic landscapes.

Lush vocals, added on several standout tracks by British prodigy Rumer, are matched with crisp instrumentation, ranging from the smoky horns on the soulful “Signs” to the delicate and beautifully arranged strings on “Same Sun.” Never afraid of experimentation, “Fuersattel” showcases a feel-good, dub-inspired vibe, while “Big Nicks,” named after a 24-hour Manhattan diner, closes the album in sleek nu-jazz style.

The title track is reflective of the album’s earthy and organic sounds, a down-tempo and cinematic number which slowly works its way into the listener’s consciousness. As with many albums in the down-tempo genre, it’s worth investing some time in Grains, as its slow grooves and multi-layered sounds take a while to become fully apparent.

At times reminiscent of recent albums by Air, with a production quality on a par with the previously incomparable Thievery Corporation, Boozoo Bajou have produced a timeless album sure to grow on sceptical listeners. While some may consider the album to be soporific, I’d argue that it’s the perfect album for times of relaxation and introspection. Girl Talk may be the perfect artist to put on during your party, but when the crowd has departed and you are left to clean up, try Boozoo Bajou’s Grains. It will make the clean up job a whole lot easier.
