Spencer Krug is one of the painstakingly, hardest working people currently making music. He involves himself with so many projects that you really have to wonder if he will suffer a breakdown at one point. Well, the good news is he is perfectly fine at the moment and his music is exploding with visceral energy and vehement liveliness. What seemed to be a temporary Wolf Parade side-project, Sunset Rubdown is now an entity of its own.
To put it succinctly, Random Spirit Lover is definitely a unique album. Krug has endeavored to cram as much amazing music as possible into one album. The skill that he pulls it off with crafts an intense, expansive and gripping album. The songs compliment each other, they bleed into each other and are all married to Krug’s theory. It is definitely a conceptual album — with a steady mix of loud and soft, fast and slow, sensitive and severe moments — but everything on it is magnificent. The knack to create complex, fractured, dynamic songs that are all connected at their base by stunning melodies is something that Sunset Rubdown does very well.
