In Case You Missed It: The Week’s Best Singles, July 24-30

air waves parting glances

The Internet is a big place. Trim the fat and have a listen to some of our favorite songs that came out this week, from pop to hip hop and everything in between. Check back each Friday for a briefing on what you missed in music.[spacer height=”12px”]

Air Waves: “Horse Race”

Like the unnamed female character in The Hold Steady’s “Chips Ahoy!,” Nicole Schneit seems set on winning big at the track. My advice? Put $900 on the fifth horse in the sixth race.[spacer height=”5px”]

Gold Class: “Life as a Gun”

This song rocks. I am, however, a little confused about the accompanying video, throughout which two adventurous souls toy around with throwing knives. Last I checked, gun ≠ knife.[spacer height=”5px”]

SPORTS: “The Washing Machine”

This song rocks but doesn’t mistake knives for guns. Then again, it doesn’t reference either weapon. Oh well! As the saying goes, always best to avoid a controversy.[spacer height=”5px”]

Stolen Jars: “Bright Red”

I wonder how they stole the jars. Maybe they used a gun. Maybe they used a knife. Hell, maybe they used both.[spacer height=”5px”]

Craig Finn: “Maggie I’ve Been Searching for Our Son”

Check down by the horse track, Craig.[spacer height=”5px”]
