The Internet is a big place. Trim the fat and have a listen to some of our favorite songs that came out this week, from pop to hip hop and everything in between. Check back each Friday for a briefing on what you missed in music.
Kurt Vile: “Pretty Pimpin”
The first single off of his highly-anticipated September release, b’lieve i’m goin down, “Pretty Pimpin” finds Vile upping the groove on his finger-picked guitar, staring into mirrors and brushing his teeth while having an identity crisis. Also, I haven’t heard anyone under the age of 40 say “pimpin’” since at least 2004 — bonus points.
HINDS: “Chili Town”
This slow-rolling single from the Madrid-based garage rock quartet is the first original track they’ve released in 2015, and we’re happy to have it — the sunny sound and intentional messiness pairs perfectly with their stronger-than-thou lyrics.
Seinabo Sey: “Pretend”
Seinabo Sey: Still way out of your league.
Lianne La Havas: “Green & Gold”
The British soul singer is back with this shimmery reflection on identity in anticipation of her upcoming sophomore release, Blood. It’s full of charming lyrics like “Trying to dip my toes in the mirror/ Thinking, ‘Who’s that girl and does the mirror world go on forever?’” sung by gilded vocal chords.
Night Beds: “Corner”
This dreamy pop-folk track will be part of Night Beds’ upcoming LP, Ivywild, which apparently front man Winston Yellen describes as a bunch of “sad sex jams.”
Here We Go Magic: “Falling”
Prog rock about falling in love that’s fresher than the prince.
Meow the Jewels: “Meowrly” (prod. BOOTS)
Thanks to the Internet and over $65,000, we get to see the Kickstarter dream of a remix of Run the Jewels 2 voiced entirely by cats come to fruition. This is the first single off of that undoubtedly Billboard chart-topping record. Still a little pissed about the excessive amount of humans involved, though.
