What’s truly a wonder about Oh Wonder is how the London duo have kept producing such tantalizing music at such a consistent pace. The group doesn’t have an album out yet—they plan to release their debut in September 2015—but to build hype in the mean time, they’re releasing a new track every month. And thanks to the addictive quality of songs like “The Rain,” Oh Wonder has us itching for September to come.
“The Rain” manages to evoke an emotional reaction the same as watching soft rain drops fall on a windowsill. It’s a quiet, melancholic, experience produced out of a sparse pitter-patter on the drums and keyboards. Like on every Oh Wonder release thus far, it’s the vocal harmonies that steal the show, matching up perfectly not just in pitch but in expression. There’s a moment near the end of the song where the instruments disappear entirely and we’re left with just the voices begging “Won’t you stay with me?” before insisting “I’ve given all my love to you,” as the beat returns and it sounds like the sky is opening up and the rain comes down harder.
