It’s been a quiet two years for truck driver by day, hunk rocker by night Daughn Gibson. The singer, who signed to Sub Pop and in 2013 released Me Moan, a swampy, heartbreaking collage of alt-country and electronic samples, broke the silence earlier this month with the announcement of his follow-up record, Carnation.
Gibson also shared the record’s first single, “Shatter You Through,” which finds the crooner leaps and bounds removed from his last effort (which had found the crooner leaps and bounds removed from his mixtape-like debut). Aside from the swagger of his signature baritone drawl, the song is darker, more eerie and more driving than his previous work.
Oddly, “Shatter You Through” reminds me of Twin Shadow’s Confess, a record inspired by late night motorcycle rides through Los Angeles. Though he’s no longer a truck driver, Daughn’s time on the road seems to only be seeping further into his music. He may be miles removed from his past, but there are some things distance just can’t shake.
