According to the U.S. Census Bureau, American women still make 77 cents for every dollar earned by a man. So if you’re entering the workforce knowing you’ve got a wide variety of uphill battles ahead of you, it’s pleasantly surprising to hear a female artist shout “I got money.”
Elliphant’s recent collaboration with MØ, “One More,” is no Women’s Studies lecture or even something as direct as “***Flawless.” It is, however, a celebration of female power, sexuality, and friendship in all its messy, imperfect glory—in its sound and its content, the track is raucous, careening, and delightful.
The music video features the pair dressed in matching Adidas tracksuits with geisha hair and makeup (ahem) and flashing LED light slip-on sneakers. They party in the back of a cab, scream at each other, make out, and even pee in the street. It’s entertaining and it’s a jam, but it also acts as a refutation of the demeanor that women are so often asked to embody: They get sloppy, they deviate from heterosexuality, they act as arbiters of their own future (or at least the immediate future of getting tacos), and they offer to pay for it.
Look for “One More” on Elliphant’s upcoming One More EP, which will release tomorrow in the U.S.
