On warm nights when I need some air and want to be a hazard to myself and those around me, I like to take my bike and headphones for a leisurely ride along the lake to test out my newest playlists and reflect on life-things. I’d like to think in Bristol, UK, this group has a parallel experience when they leave the studio, inspiring the light, soothing tracks which are literally made for this.
When I say “tracks” I mean the two tracks that they’ve shared so far, though their debut EP is only a short wait away (it drops July 28). Elder Island’s recent release, “The Big Unknown,” shines a light on the funky, upbeat side of the trio while “What It’s Worth” is a leaner, satisfyingly basic complement. Simple, overlaid rhythms create the delicate platform on which indignant vocals flow with charming indifference. Repeated throughout the track, two lines sum up the bitter but resilient tone:
“Now that you’ve found your fears, collect your tears and leave the rest for me.”
“King in a court of thieves, I bet it’s just a crown of string and leaves.”
