Me to myself this morning (in my head not out loud tho):

“Ok so did u hear Spoon is back with a brand new audio recording?”
“OH JEEZ no way what’s the new audio recording called?!?”
“Well, so it’s called Rent I Pay and it’s good!!!”
“OMG so is there a new album coming out too then?!”
“YES THERE IS BABY”

K now I’ll just do what I normally do… so…

We last heard from Britt Daniel and Co. in 2010 with the stellar Transference, arguably Spoon’s darkest album to date. Trading the blissful (not to mention commercially successful) pop grooves of 2007’s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga for a noisy, moody palette, Transference was one of the finest curveballs in Spoon’s discography. It left the door pretty much wide open as to what the band would do next. Would Britt go rock ‘n’ roll ’90s-style Spoon? Eh maybe not, maybe he’d go early-2000s funky Spoon. Oh WAIT NO, he’d repeat the sleek, record selling pop on Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga to appease his father.

WELL IT TURNS OUT BRITT DIDN’T DO ANY OF THAT.

By this point, Spoon kinda just sounds like… Spoon. The band’s latest single, “Rent I Pay,” is three minutes of meticulous, cleverly produced rock. Taking the swagger of early 2000s cuts like “My Mathematical Mind” and pairing it with the intensity of more recent Spoon tracks like “Written in Reverse,” “Rent I Pay” brings the heat. As per usual, Daniel’s vocals are gritty and his lyrics sharp as can be, while the guitars and drums border on controlled chaos. If every track on Spoon’s forthcoming is as good as this one, we’ll have a real winner on our hands.

Spoon’s eighth LP, They Want My Soul, is out August 5 on Loma Vista.
