I bet Hundred Waters would make a mean soundtrack. The Gainsville, Florida quartet’s music has a cinematic, weightless quality that would kill in, I don’t know, maybe an apocalyptic space drama or something.
In describing Hundred Waters, journalists like to toss around “folktronica” (which really means nothing) but the band almost can’t be labeled. They flow seamlessly from one mood to another without conveying a particular genre. Singer Nicole Miglis has a breathy, quirky vocal style that’s (OK I’ll try) part Björk, part Julia Holter, and part Annie Clark. She spits impressionistic lyrics with uncanny fluidity and lends a human touch to Hundred Waters’ electronica. The band fuses ambient synths with minimalistic computer drums for a sound that’s both haunting and seductive. At times, Hundred Waters sound not dissimilar to their minimal pop peers The xx (a band they’ve opened for in years past).
“Cavity” is a new single from Hundred Waters and it’s probably their best track yet. The song takes the strongest elements of 2012’s Hundred Waters LP and consolidates them in one stellar package. The band is poised to do some big things so you should become a Hundred Waters pioneer right now before they get too cool.
