When listening to “Mercury Child,” I imagine the hypothetical music video following a group of friends on a summer drive before arriving at night for a house dance party. The good vibes continue from day to night with the only lull being an after shot of the party when the music cuts.
It is a synth-heavy indie pop standard. Not standard in the sense of a blues or jazz standard, but standard in that in falls in line and capitalizes on what is popular right now. The lo-fi vocals make this dance-ready groove a quick indie favorite, but the song also follows electronic music’s formula with a solid four-to-the-floor dance beat and a crescendoing that signals the change from broken-down verses to uptempo choruses. The happy-go-lucky synth acts as a platform for the basic rhythm that gets you bobbing your head like Steve and Doug from A Night at the Roxbury.
“Mercury Child” is only Blood Cultures’ second song released, following “Indian Summer” from last year. While less intricate than his first release, “Mercury Child” is an in-your-pocket jam that will get your friends ready for the night.
