We’ve been waiting quite a while for Sky Ferreira’s debut album but tomorrow, after three years and a slew of singles and two well-received EPs, she’ll release Night Time, My Time. She’s generated a lot of buzz in that time, much of it not for her music. Ferreira and boyfriend Zach Cole Smith of DIIV were arrested for drug possession last month, her upcoming album features the 21-year-old singer/model posing semi-nude in a shower, and she’s recently been spotted out on the town with Miley Cyrus a couple times which led to tabloid rumors that the two were romantically involved. This is all really interesting stuff (I guess) but the wild-child, controversy-causing image Sky Ferreira is presenting should not distract from the fact that she’s highly capable of making a darn good pop tune, “You’re Not the One” possibly being the best yet.
Ferreira’s output has been pretty musically diverse, including on Euro-house infused dance songs and fairly scaled back and moody ballads like last year’s excellent “Everything’s Embarrassing”. She’s about as established as an artist can be before releasing a first LP, but “You’re Not the One” truly feels like her triumphant introductory statement to the world. Content-wise, it doesn’t stray far from the “I’m hung up on you but you don’t want me and man that’s a bummer” song. The whole package, though, with its glistening electronic grooves and thundering drumbeat is a real treat. Think Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” with a little less self-pity but just as much attitude. Like most quality pop music, it is easily digestible, catchy, and memorable. Miley Cyrus better watch out.
