Dana Falconberry is unmatchable in her ability to capture feelings that seemed previously intangible. She makes us feel like we are experiencing something large. The orchestral pop-folk band draws heavily on the wonder of nature, love, loss, and childhood nostalgia for Falconberry’s native home of Michigan.
Falconberry and her band not only rely on the carefully crafted lyrics but also on creating a harmonious sound. It feels like something created by the female cousin of Sufjan Stevens, but the dynamic vocal harmonies and the plethora of instruments used create a sound all their own.
It’s a sound that floats and moves over an expansive pastoral scene. It flows and turns in the most pleasantly unexpected ways. It feels hopeful and warm. The landscape created is something that you can lose yourself in, much like a good book or a conversation with an old friend.
Falconberry and her band sound stunning and perfected on their most recent album, Leelanau, but it’s their live presence that really gets me. I had the pleasure of seeing them play a small show at Strictly Discs last summer and it was just beautiful to put it so simply. They are captivating. It’s the musical talent and vision of people like Falconberry and her band that remind us why we always feel a draw to go see live music.
