Jon Waltz started rapping at age 15 and is tooling around with a sound wave we can appreciate. The sound of Waltz’s voice registers two familiar names: the flow of Kendrick Lamar and the pipes of a certain cripple from Degrassi. It may be premature to call Waltz the next Drake, but the 18-year-old from Memphis is making a name for himself with “Bang (Left My Home),” which has nearly 16,700 plays on SoundCloud.

With what sounds like an electro-organ echoing in the backdrop, Waltz stands out. He presents emotion with fluidity, permeating his message without force. Though the track is simple and lacks a master production, the simplicity will bring you back for another listen. Not to mention the chorus, which is bound to repeat in your mind: “Left my home with a dream and a cigarette…” But don’t smoke cigarettes because they give you cancer.
