Ever since the latest Grizzly Bear album, Shields, came out in September, the fans have been trying to put a finger on what made this album so unique and perhaps the most accomplished product of the band. Even though there are many elements that contributed to Shields‘s success, it is safe to say that the fourth track on the album, “Yet Again,” acts as a heart muscle, pumping the necessary creativity and harmony to the album’s veins.
Just like “Sleeping Ute,” “Yet Again” is a result of Daniel Rossen’s musical genius. Even though Rossen made the song separately from the band, long before the album, “Yet Again” does a splendid job showing the specific talents of the band members without taking anything away from the Grizzly Bear spirit the fans love.
The mellow, lullaby-like beginning led by Ed Droste’s clean and unforgettable vocals, combined with Rossen’s crisp guitar goes well with ideas of repression and being silenced emphasized in the song.
As the melody and the gentle beats of Chris Bear takes the listeners to a different land, we are forced to get back to reality as the attitude of the song shifts to a more Thom Yorke-inspired one in 4:30. The final minute of “Yet Again” brings out the distorted tunes that make Grizzly Bear so appealing to us, yet still holding that smooth harmony together.
Overall, the musical quality of “Yet Again” gives us the best of Grizzly Bear has to offer and deserves to be on every indie lover’s playlist with the rest of the Shields.
