What first caught my eye about Glow Marrow was the gnarly album art for their EP Braver Days. In a visually striking color scheme, the artwork shows a road-killed bunny that has likely seen the wrath of a semi. The yellow background gives the bunny’s spilled entrails some pop and you can’t help but let your eyes ravage image before you. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the graphic wind up on some t-shirts, either (if so, hook me up).
The high school friendship of Derek Coburn and Darin Green provided the foundation for Glow Marrow in Thousand Oaks, CA, where the duo’s been hard at work with Wavves and Fool’s Gold producer Eric Palmquist in preparation for their forthcoming EP, which we can expect to see September 15. Though the North Hollywood duo has only revealed the single “Julian” thus far, it’s got me in a vice grip of anticipation. “Julian” is the type of track that goes great with a sunny day, a lawn chair, and a drink in your hand.
The opening’s pitter-pattering of drums and surfy guitar licks are highly reminiscent of Vampire Weekend, and when the vocals kick in it almost sounds like Ezra Koenig himself singing on the track. Coburn’s singing when the chorus hits is worldly, in that his all encompassing voice rings out when he belts the song’s title man over tropical steel-drums and tribal backbeat.
If the tracks to follow on Braver Days resemble anything like the indie rock grandeur of VW, then hopefully we can see Glow Marrow take their show outside the greater Los Angeles area.
