Minneapolis-based Night Moves are set to open for Dirty Projectors tonight as part of the Majestic Theatre’s 5 Year Anniversary. With a unique sound that blends everything from country twang to spacey psychedelia, Night Moves signed with indie giant Domino Records earlier this year. Though they’ve yet to release a full-length, Night Moves have garnered a strong buzz from their highly-acclaimed live show. Their debut album, Colored Emotions, will arrive via Domino Records on October 9.
You spent a sporadic two years recording Colored Emotions and an additional year waiting for the release. How difficult has it been to sit on the record for so long?
“The most difficult thing has been wanting and waiting to play new material. We are very excited to be on Domino Records — very humbled and honored.”
Has touring steadily since recording the album affected the songs on Colored Emotions?
“They haven’t changed much. I think have improved the sound of the songs live.”
Hometown support seems to be a big factor in your success. How has Minneapolis shaped your progression as a band? What’s your opinion on the music scene there?
“Living in Minneapolis has allowed us to play out a lot, maybe more so than other places in the U.S., because Minneapolis has a lot of venues and a big music scene. There are a lot of groups here. It’s great, though, having grown up in this place — maybe we are a bit spoiled or lucky.
You’ve named artists like Neil Young and Todd Rundgren as influences. The older influences are definitely present in your sound but the end result is something that sounds quite contemporary. What modern bands and artists are you guys into?
“Tame Impala, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Danny Brown, Pond, Ryan Adams, Frank Ocean.”
With a promising record deal and an anticipated debut album on the way, the future is certainly looking bright for Night Moves. What are some of your goals and aspirations for the next year?
“Play a large festival and have people come up to us while we are at thee urinal.”
