“Dance for You” marks the second single release from Dirty Projectors’ upcoming album, Swing Lo Magellan, the Brooklyn outfit’s sixth studio album set to release next Tuesday. This most recent single provides a preview of the band’s forthcoming record that lead man Dave Longstreth says is “an album of songwriting.” Known for their uncanny ability to encompass various musical styles and aesthetics (like their second album that blended West African R&B with ’80s hardcore rockers Black Flag), Dirty Projectors proves their genius once again with teasing sneak peak singles “Gun Has No Trigger” and “Dance for You” fueled by wave-like harmonies rising and falling over walking bass lines, hand claps, and snare. Even the guitar has a voice on Dirty Projectors’ latest efforts, delicately intertwining with vocal melodies.
Recorded in a house in Delaware County, New York, Swing Lo Magellan comes mostly from Longstreth’s seemingly sleepless tlwelve months where the 31-year-old wrote, recorded, and mixed close to 70 songs running candidacy for spots on the 12-track album. The remaining four members joined Longstreth periodically throughout the course of the year-long creative process, rehearsing the fruits of their labor in the house’s attic from time to time.
If Swing Lo Magellan is Dirty Projectors’ way of saying “look what we can do,” then there’s no choice but to sit back and let the fluid melodies wash over you. Currently on tour supporting the anticipated release of Swing Lo Magellan, the Brooklyn quintet will be making an appearance at Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago this summer, as well as a European tour come mid-October.
