If the amount of time I have spent day drinking alone in my underpants is any gauge, summer is in full swing. The summers of youth are iconic and, as everyone who has gone through puberty knows, this time of year needs an anthem. Something to replenish your body’s natural reserves of nostalgia for the bitter months ahead. The song is never something chosen, it just seems to fall into place — flowing into your memories effortlessly, underlining the defining moments, filling in the cracks.
The song “Run” from Brooklyn-by-way-of-Florida indie pop duo Blonds is the kind anthem your summer might have if you were a freewheelin’, motorcycle ridin’, heartbroken, heart breakin’, heart of gold Nancy-Sinatra-type ex-prostitute on the lam. “Run” is the first single off of the band’s debut album The Bad Ones, set for release in early August. The sultry, sad vocals are reminiscent of Chan Marshall, but “Run” was definitely created with an image in mind in addition to a sentiment. An aesthetic can corrupt the sincerity of a song, but Blonds have managed to straddle the line between vision and feeling. I expect a good dose of both from The Bad Ones.
