Upon hearing the piano introduction on Nneka’s recently released “My Home,” you may find yourself unsure of exactly where the song is going. A few more seconds, however, brings in a completely new feel from the classically inspired intro, presenting the listener with a song that pulls from reggae, hip-hop, and Motown soul influences.
With her debut album The Uncomfortable Truth, German-Nigerian born Nneka gained a reputation for producing music with a world conscious ring to it — a trait that still holds strong throughout the course of “My Home.” Within the track, Nneka takes pervasive topics (such as what constitutes “home” in the modern world) and presents them with the lighthearted backdrop of a song that you can’t help but sing along to. Upbeat, catchy, and layered with powerful vocals, “My Home” effectively comes off as a soulful release from the pressures of everyday life.
While not so original that it will necessarily stand strong through the test of time, for the here and now, “My Home” is a brilliantly encompassing anthem for the general sentiment of youth today. The repeat line “where do I go / when the world forsakes me” is a universal theme that carries with it promise of success because if nothing else, as soon as it comes on, all you want to do is dance.
