“What does it take to be lonesome? Nothing at all…”

As does a preponderance of indie music today, Dr. Dog aims to echo the sound of the ’60s. Be the Void, Dr. Dog’s sixth album, marks a polished progression in indie folk music. While 1960s psychedelic-rock-pop influence creeps on their style, listeners may find that the refurbished production drags in more ’90s grunge-pop than intended. Additionally, the twelve new songs possess enough uniqueness, depth, and reverberation to blueprint an entirely new decade of stylistic approach. Old fans will be the void. New listeners will enter the void. Consequently, the old and new perspective will be identically distorted 47½ minutes later, making for a stirring musical experience.

“Lonesome” harasses the typical nature of verse with its lachrymose words and tonality. The loaded lyrics prove to exhibit genuine emotion when matched with the flat, overdriven guitar. Yet this misery works for the best! The steep climb up the blues-rock ladder escalates music to a new height, mounting emotion and guitar sound to its peak. Peaking at sentiment and furthering experimentation all whilst maintaining polished production, Dr. Dog’s Be the Void is a vital succession to previous albums. For those who like it rough, see ’em live. You will obtain that scrappy, penetrating sound we all feel in the roots of the production.
