“Golden Maps”
from the EP Golden Maps
2011
Dropping out of school to become “beach hippies” probably isn’t a move academia’s career advisors would approve of, but if it results in sounds like League’s then maybe they should be encouraging more people to swap textbooks and all-nighters in the library for tents pitched on golden sand and swimming in azure seas all day.
Formed by the fantastically named Jorge Ribeiro and José Tornada, League studied architecture and journalism in formal education but they’ve also clearly been poring over the works of psychedelic pop auteurs in their spare time. “Golden Maps” swoons with the influence of Myths of the Near Future-era Klaxons, all shining “oohs” and neon synth melodies. They seem to share the same ideologies too, at least on this track, with mentions of the future and a distinct abstract sci-fi feel, like meteors dancing through strobing starlight.
