“Right Away”

Formed two years ago in Minneapolis, the bare bones, folk-leaning sound of Peter Pisano and Brian Moen’s Peter Wolf Crier came off as a multi-faceted, yet subtle little project. Their self-released first album, 2010’s Inter-Be, quickly garnered praise in Midwest taste circles for its dynamic, heart-string tuggers, anchored by Pisano’s quivering half-falsetto. These days, they seem to be drifting away from those initial folk tendencies, as evident on “Right Away,” the first taste from their forthcoming sophomore set, Garden of Arms. Now they’re exploring a woozier, soundscapier version of themselves, where nonsensical piano lines and ambient guitar textures are coupled with Moen’s reserved drumming. At the risk of crying wolf, we’re going to say the expectations are now high for the pair in moving beyond that initial understated guitar-and-drum sound.
