“Swim Club”

A few months ago, the Cave Singers announced that they’d be releasing their third album, No Witch, on Jagjaguwar Records. No Witch comes out on February 22, and since the band’s changed labels (2007’s Invitation Songs and 2009’s Welcome Joy were both Matador releases), fans have probably been wondering if a change in sound will follow as well.
Stereogum recently premiered the first single from No Witch; the song is called “Swim Club” and should put longtime Cave Singers fans’ minds at ease — “Swim Club” is the same old comforting Cave Singers sound. Some things just don’t need to change.
Stereogum rightly compares “Swim Club” to Welcome Joy‘s standout track, “Beach House” — both songs are low-key and swell with warmth and harmony, led by gentle guitar picking and Peter Quirk’s throaty vocals. Welcome Joy was such a beautiful and successful record that Cave Singers fans shouldn’t mind a continuation of its sonic hallmarks.
It’s a promising sign, but we’ll have to wait and see what the rest of No Witch brings.
