Did you know that Bon Iver isn’t just Justin Vernon? Sure, the Wisconsin-born singer is the heart and soul, not to mention the mastermind, behind hits like For Emma, Forever Ago, but he can’t do it without his backing band. And if you thought Vernon was the only member capable of sustaining a solo career, think again. Sean Carey, the guy who plays drums and piano and provides back-up vocals, is about to release his own solo album entitled All We Grow (August 24).
While Bon Iver’s been taking off over the last couple years, Carey has been slowly building the album in his home studio set-up (along with some time spent at April Base, Vernon’s studio outside of Eau Claire). And with his history as a drummer, expect the album to explore some pretty interesting percussion. “In the Dirt,” already available via Jagjaguwar, is a steady journey of ethereal repetition and jazz piano, capped off by Carey’s pained vocal styling with remnants of Vernon’s but still completely his own.
