With a name like Band of Skulls, you’ll be forgiven for assuming that this is the latest in a long line of Southern hardcore metal bands. But the truth is that assumption couldn’t be farther from the truth. Yes, these guys (and one girl) are a rock band…but they hail from England and they have more in common with The White Stripes and The Verve than say, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster or Every Time I Die.

Band of Skulls specializes in a retro rock sound, with garage overtones. And that description isn’t meant as a slam. They’ve got a very catchy vibe, without coming across as clones or wannabes. It’s good stuff, with a very solid groove and feel. Definitely one of the better new artists that I’ve heard in a long time.

If you dig The White Stripes or even the Raconteurs, with a dash of The Verve’s quieter, more introspective moments, you definitely should check out Band of Skulls. For now, the album is only available digitally (iTunes or Amazon). But at $5.99, you’ve really got no excuse not to get this. Get to it!
