Merge Records has unveiled the first single from M. Ward‘s anticipated release Hold Time (out February 17), which features a bevy of guest appearances. One guest you may already be well-acquainted with: Ward’s delightful She & Him counterpart, the multi-talented and recently engaged Zooey Deschanel. Undoubtedly this pair is a match made in musical heaven, so it is no wonder M. Ward invited her to perform backing tracks on a couple of his songs.
While it’s a bit more bluesy-country than She & Him’s golden radio sounds, the vibe is all M. as he retreats from his 2008 backseat (not that he’s complaining, of course) to deliver an upbeat number in the driver’s seat. Sung in his signature scruff and led by his do-no-wrong guitar licks, M. admits to all his faults with past girlfriends blaming the song’s title for justification. But is he talking about a new flame or perhaps paying homage to Zooey as his long-awaited musical doppelganger? Sorry, M. Take it up with Ben.
