Gin Wigmore is fairly confident she’s the only blonde-haired, blue-eyed artist ever to sign to Motown, home of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Diana Ross. “It is a bit weird being a little blondie on a black label,” says the 22-year-old singer-songwriter, who moved to Sydney, Australia 18 months ago. “But they’re like: ‘Don’t worry about it, man, it’s cool.'” At 18, Auckland-born Wigmore became the youngest-ever winner of the prestigious International Songwriting Contest for “Hallelujah” — a song she’d written at age 16 about her late dad. “Hallelujah” features on her five-track EP Extended Play, which mixes jaunty pop and sassy soul. “My music at the moment is just a mash-up of stuff, with a gospel vibe, a Blondie vibe and crazy instruments like ukulele and mellotron,” says Wigmore, who last month flew out to Britain and the U.S. to meet potential producers for her debut album, set to be recorded in February and March. “I wasn’t really too serious about music when I was in New Zealand but when I won the songwriting contest it dawned on me that I could have a career. I just did my first arena show and it was with Phil Collins and John Mellencamp. Eight months ago I was playing to tables and chairs, now Sheryl Crow is going on after me. I love this.”

Please don’t ever think that this artist is the first blonde haired blue eyed singer to sign for Motown!

Take a look back in the archives for

    1. Chris Clark

    2. Debbie Dean (maybe died her hair, but appeared blonde)

    To name at least 2!
