Crash ‘n’ Burn Victims
from the album Hexes for Exes
2007
iTunes

Hexes for Exes isn’t just for cursing your ex into the 9th circle of hell. Beyond the irrefutable desire to tap, tap, tap your foot to the pendulous drums, this album will turn your focus to the lowest points of relationships. It covers the cycle of indecision, denial, loss, isolation, insecurity and the ponderings of futile endeavors. Once again, Moving Units has created ear-pleasing simplicity; however, likened to the previous album, Dangerous Dreams, the dizzying drone of vocals during the upbeat tracks causes a bout of wallflower-inducing boredom. Luckily, those interruptions cease to stop Blake Miller’s reference to a “desperate lover’s call,” during the closing “Blood Beats.” We even get a nice demonstration of it at the end of “Hearts Departed,” as he cries over the reverberated guitar loop. If the band continues to brood over painful episodes of broken relationships, there can only be more success. We can only hope their lovers will continue to earn their record-mentionable whammies.
