He used to tour as a hired guitarist with Primal Scream, but Barrie Cadogan’s own music is steeped in rockabilly and blues. Stand Your Ground, his second album with his eponymous Nottingham trio, romanticises the era when groovy young British bands looked westward for inspiration. There’s not much attempt to incorporate developments post-1960 — producer Dan the Automator, of Gorillaz renown, could have brought his hip-hop experience to bear, but he lets Barrie follow his heart. A wise decision, as Barrie is a compelling frontman; pitting street-corner punk vocals against volleys of reverb and twang, he gives songs such as “Green Eyed Fool” a ticking urgency that makes them substantially more than just retro fare. It’s only when things slow down for “Why Don’t You Do It?” — listen for Cadogan shamelessly nudging up the husky-voiced sexometer — that the album goes off the boil a bit. By then, though, you’ll be hooked.
Curiously enough Why Don’t You Do It? is my favourite thing on there
