The Next Untouchable

So what’ll it be, then, the next Arctic Monkeys or the next Mystery Jets? North London teenage fivesome Cajun Dance Party are the latest indie lads (and lass) to drive the UK kids Kooks-y. First single “The Next Untouchable” hints why: guitars shift on a tuppence from bee-swarming attack circles to sensitive Room on Fire chimes, while heavy-breathing Daniel’s cracking voice wears wounded passion the way American teens wear braces. Hi-hats splash as if someone were drowning as the song whirs around vague-but-appealing, “regret”-rhymes-with-“cigarette” boy/girl stuff: “Do you really like me?/ ‘Cause one and one and one makes three.” It’s not yet up to the level of Monkeys frontman Alex Turner’s perfect slang/youth narratives, but the band’s ferocious energy probably kills in concert, and it also does the job here. Not the next Art Brut, though. Just saying.
