Gran Bel Fisher’s Full Moon Cigarette is a fusion of guitar driven rock, beautiful piano ballads, and pop rock — with even some jazz thrown in for good measure.

For the new album, Fisher worked with Joey Waronker and Justin Meldal-Johnsen (who also play with Beck), and tracking took place at the legendary Sunset Sound — where seminal bands like Led Zeppelin and the Doors recorded.

Those influences are easily heard as an influence on this album, which is a good thing in my opinion. Fisher is able to cross several genres of rock with Full Moon Cigarette to create an album that blend today’s pop rock sound with a classic rock feel.

The singer (who’s voice has similarities to Jim Morrison at times and literary seems haunting in some tracks) has a good blend of just about every kind of popular music being played on today’s radio. His songs have the kind of hooks that pull you into them by the first chorus, and are easily enjoyable.

The 11-track album features moody piano/guitar driven songs like the title track “Full Moon Cigarette” to slower jazz like tunes such as “Do We Say Bye” -– where Fisher seems to channel Frank Sinatra at times, and then drift into the sounds of the Doors.

I would recommend the album to anyone wanting to take a chance on something new. Fisher has created a strong album with songs that have weight to them, and is enjoyable from start to finish.
