WHO Singer-songwriter Pond, who grew up in New Hampshire but now lives in Brooklyn, and his backing band: Guitarist-pianist Brian Pearl, drummer Dan Crowell and bassist Daniel Mitha. Wherefore, then, the “PA”? Pond first put out records in the late Nineties while living in Philadelphia.
SOUND You could call it emo for grown-ups: sweetly somber baroque pop with a persistent jangle and bleeding heart that ought to appeal to fans of The Shins and Death Cab for Cutie. Small wonder, then, that Pond’s cover of Oasis’ “Champagne Supernova” earned a slot as background music on The O.C.
SOME GIRLS Though Pond says he tries to adapt his real-life romantic misfortunes so they’re unrecognizable, he acknowledges that the upcoming Several Arrows Later is his most autobiographical album yet. “It’s all true,” he says. “It’s about letting go, knowing that the thing you love the most — like girls — is the worst thing for you sometimes. And then just going right back to it anyway.”
